Late in 1992, Toyota entered the full-size pickup-truck market with its T-100. The new truck, which featured a roomy interior, was sized larger than compact pickups but smaller than domestic pickups. The T100's unique size put the truck in a niche by itself, but it competed most closely with the full-size pickups from Dodge, Chevrolet and Ford as well as Dodge's midsize Dakota.
The full-size pickup-truck market was known for an impressive array of body configurations that allowed buyers to mix and match to suit their needs. The T100 continued to buck this trend by offering just one body/cab/bed configuration.
Year-to-year changes[]
1994[]
The base-level engine was the 2.7-liter dohc inline 4-cylinder, which was available with 2-wheel drive only. The V6 was available in both 2-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive versions. The 4wd models featured a 2-speed transfer case with a floor-mounted shift lever and automatic locking hubs for shift-on-the-fly operation at speeds up to 50 mph.
1995[]
For 1995, the T100 received a long-awaited engine upgrade. A new 3.4-liter dohc V6 replaced the 3.0-liter V6 as the optional powerplant. The new engine delivered 40 more horsepower than the 1994 model and increased towing capacity to 5200 pounds. Also new for 1995 were a reconfigured bench seat and a new audio lineup.
The other major change for 1995 was the expanded availability of automatic transmissions, which were now available on both 2wd and 4wd V6s as well as with the 2wd 4-cylinder. A locking fuel door was also new for 1995.
Late in spring 1995, the big development was the introduction of extended-cab models with 50/50-split forward-facing rear jump seats that seat three. The Xtracab's stronger frame boosted cargo-carrying capacity significantly over the regular-cab version.
1996[]
The Toyota T100 continued to make its way, albeit slowly, into the full-size pickup truck mainstream through the addition of features designed to make the truck appeal to a broader range of buyers.
This year, minor changes to the line occurs. The base-grade V6 and SR5 regular-cab models have been deleted, and the DX nomenclature was discontinued. Cruise control was no longer available on standard (STD) models, but new exterior/interior color and trim combinations were being offered.
The T100 was designed to appeal to younger buyers who wanted a roomy interior and full-size cargo bed but in a less massive package. The base-level engine remained the 150-horsepower 2.7-liter dohc inline 4-cylinder, which was available in 2-wheel drive only. The optional engine was the 190-hp 3.4-liter dohc V6, which was available in both 2-wheel- and 4-wheel-drive configurations.
The standard transmission in the T100 was a 5-speed manual, with a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic optional. The 4-wheel-drive models featured a 2-speed transfer case and automatic locking hubs for shift-on-the-fly operation.
