Subaru's first SUV, the Forester, was released in July 1997. It was a compact car from the 1998 model year until 2007.

1998[]
The 1998 Forester came in base, L and S trim levels. Transmission was 5-speed manual, with 4-speed automatic as an option. Full-time AWD system automatically redirected power between front and rear wheels based on traction needs. Manual transmission models featured viscous-coupling locking center differential. Automatic transmission models featured electronically managed, continuously variable torque control.
