The 928 had relatively few changes over its long life, increases in engine size and horsepower, sohc to dohc, body side moldings, small spoilers added, upgrades to meet changing federal standards, and continual refinement generally. The Mercedes SL500 and BMW 850 were its natural competitors, but the Lexus SC 400 and the Jaguar XJS12 were also considered, too.

In some ways the 928 showed its age: Visibility and interior space were limited and gas mileage, no worse than its 12-cylinder competition, was not its strong suit. Despite the age, there was no finer road car, the combination of ride, handling, road feel, noise, and sheer ability to coddle the driver and passenger just weren't surpassed.

The list of standard equipment was long: Electronically variable limited-slip differential, electric sunroof (closes automatically when door is locked with key), fog and driving lights, rear spoiler, heated washer nozzles, headlight washers, rear wiper and defroster with two heat settings, electric (heated and adjustable) mirrors, tinted glass, power seats, leather, seat/mirror memory, an instrument cluster that adjusted along with the steering column, electric rear hatch release for driver and passenger, climate control with separate rear a/c, power windows, cruise control, 160-watt stereo with remote CD changer and 6-speakers.

If the list of standard equipment wasn't enough, Porsche also offered such other options as adjustable heating for the front seats, sport seats with electric height adjustment, special supple leather, cloth upholstery, cellular phone and more.
