In 1996, Mercedes-Benz presented a small coupe and the eagerly awaited Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class compact roadster convertible, built off the C-Class platform. It was released in January 1997 as one of the earliest 1998 models ever in America.
Year-to-year changes[]
1998[]
The first SLK-Class convertibles only had one trim level and 5-speed automatic transmission.
1999[]
A new Sport trim level joined the base model in the lineup, and 5-speed manual transmission became standard, making automatic transmission now optional.
