The refined and rounded appearance of the Isuzu Trooper reflected its standing in the 3-model Isuzu sport/utility fleet. As the flagship model since 1981, the Trooper's mission was to project an image of contemporary luxury and sophisticated style. The Trooper appealed to buyers seeking a blend of high performance, rugged durability and luxury. Key competitors included the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Oldsmobile Bravada and Ford Explorer.

1991[]
The 1991 Isuzu Trooper had different trim levels compared to the '90s generation Trooper -- LS, S, SE and XS -- all available only with 4-wheel drive.
1992[]
Redesigned for 1992, the Trooper was available in two body styles and four trim levels. Four-door models featured a base-level S and upscale LS trim. The 2-door models came in a single trim level only, the RS.
Two versions of the same V6 engine were available. The base engine was a 175-hp sohc 3.2-liter V6. The optional engine was a 190-hp dohc 3.2-liter V6. The standard transmission was a 5-speed manual. A 4-speed automatic was available as an option.
1995[]
The Trooper benefited from a number of enhancements during the past couple of years, so for 1995 Isuzu was content to sit pat. The 1995 Trooper was a carryover model, and was the last to go on sale for this model year in early 1995.
For this model year, the special-edition top-of-the-line LTD model was available in limited quantities as a midyear introduction. It featured a distinctive 2-tone paint scheme, special 16-in. aluminum wheels, a sunroof, CD changer, ABS, limited-slip differential and heated leather seats. The 4wd system featured automatic locking hubs and a 2-speed transfer case for shift-on-the-fly 4wd operation.
1996[]
The 1996 Isuzu Trooper went on sale in November 1995 as the first 1996 model from Isuzu.
The Trooper remained on sale until 2002.
