Positioned in the middle of the full-size sport/utility market, the GMC Yukon (originally known as the GMC Jimmy) appeals to buyers who require a big SUV. It competes against its near-twin, the Chevrolet Tahoe, as well as the Ford Bronco and Expedition.
For 1992, the GMC Jimmy was renamed to GMC Yukon. It was unveiled at the 1992 North American International Auto Show on January 9, 1992.
The 1995 GMC Yukon receives no major exterior changes, but does benefit from a number of significant interior improvements. These include a driver's-side airbag, brake-transmission shift interlock and an all-new instrument panel that contains more-easily-read gauges. Also on board for 1995 is an improved climate-control system, dual slide-out cup holders and 12-volt accessory outlets. Contoured seats have also been added to the line. For the first time, leather seats can be ordered as an option.
Later in the year, look for GMC to introduce a 4-door version that will fill the gap between the 2-door Yukon and the Suburban.
The Yukon is available in only one basic form--a 4-wheel-drive 2-door body style. Two trim levels are offered: the base-level SL and the top-of-the-line SLE. The standard engine is the venerable 5.7-liter 200-hp ohv V8. The standard equipment transmission is a 5-speed manual, which has been re-engineered for easier shifting and quieter operation. A 4-speed automatic is optional. The only optional engine is a 6.5-liter 180-hp turbocharged diesel V8. Although the turbodiesel is down 20 hp compared to the gas engine, it's got 50 more ft.-lb. of torque. The diesel can be mated only to the 4-speed automatic transmission. A 2-speed transfer case with a floor-mounted shift lever provides shift-on-the-fly 4wd operation.
