The Mazda 929 was a mid/full-size 4-door sedan that lasted for five generations in more than 20 years. Its main competitors at the low end of the luxury car market included the Lexus ES 250/300, Infiniti J30, Mitsubishi Diamante, Acura Legend, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The 929 no longer had the performance advantage enjoyed by its predecessor, as many of its competitors had caught up in the horsepower and handling race.
Year-to-year changes[]
1991[]
In 1991, there was also a fourth-generation 929S with 190 hp, an enhanced suspension combined with rear-wheel drive.
1992[]
The car was redesigned on the outside, and upgraded to now contain 195 horsepower. This was carried over for 1993.
1994[]
The 929 had rear drive, multilink suspension, ventilated disc brakes front and rear, an aerodynamically effective body, excellent 4-speed automatic with Mazda's "hold" feature, an optional limited-slip differential, excellent ergonomics, a comprehensive instrument cluster, standard leather and wood interior. The standard powerplant continued to be a 24-valve dohc 3.0-liter V6 that developed 195 hp. The emphasis was on luxury with a ride that's soft and not especially well controlled. Interior noise level was higher than some of its competitors.
1995[]
The 1995 929 had absolutely no pretensions toward being a sport sedan. With the addition of the Millenia to Mazda's lineup, the days of the 929 were numbered. In other changes for 1995, the 929 gained three new colors, lost four, and dropped the slate gray interior.
